Stylish street style photoshoot secrets
As a fashion photographer in Lisbon, I’m always looking for cool new locations. Getting a stylish shot is easy if you know the key secrets. Let me share my life hacks for creating a modern, trendy and interesting magazine shot.
Location
The first and most important element of the puzzle. For me, a stylish shot means a minimal background and maximum simplicity. One of my favorite areas in Lisbon for this kind of photography is the Parque das Nações. Most of the examples in this article were taken here. It is the modern, laconic buildings, lines, textures and even simple walls that give me the opportunity to capture a cool photo quickly and easily.
Outfit
When choosing an outfit for a model, I choose one of two options. The first is a laconic look that perfectly matches the color scheme of the location. The so-called mono look. The second option is an outfit in a very bright, contrasting color, which is immediately readable in the frame as the main accent.
Pose
One of the most important secrets is a natural, organic pose. The time for being artificial is long gone. The model can walk, stand, sit, or even lie down. The most important thing is smoothness, simplicity and clarity of movement.
Geometry
Architecture, geometric lines, parallels, and rhythm always add style to the frame. When shooting with a wide-angle lens, pay attention to the composition of the frame. It is sometimes very difficult to correct the lines in post-production. But… Do you really need to correct them? Current trends in fashion photography show that now is the time to break all the rules and shoot in a new way. Unleash your imagination and create photos beyond all norms and standards.
Light
Almost all of the shots in my portfolio were taken in natural light, or more specifically, in sunny weather. I often go to the location a day or two before the shoot at a certain time of day and check exactly where the sun is. Such a simple but very important secret. The play of light and shadow in the picture is very beautiful.
Details in the frame
Make sure there are no unnecessary small objects in the frame at the location that might distract attention. For me, a stylish shot is the absolute minimal. For example, a shot of a man was taken on a staircase where people were walking all the time. We waited a while to get a few seconds without people. Yes, I know, today’s technology makes it possible to remove unnecessary objects from the frame. But how cool is it to take a photo that immediately looks stylish and cool without any editing!
Angle matters
Shoot the same scene from three or four different angles. Sometimes the photographer shoots a photo from a well-known angle and perspective. But as soon as you turn a little to the left or right, crouch lower or stand lower, the frame changes completely. Experiment. Go beyond. And break the rules. Let your style evolve and change. Because a photographer is a creator. And beauty can be created by those who notice it!
