My years as a fashion photographer in Lisbon and across Portugal taught me a great deal about natural light and using the surroundings as part of a story. I’m now based in Miami, Florida, and those interests are still central to my work. Here’s what draws me outside, and when an interior or studio may be the better choice. ## Working with natural light Natural sunlight can give skin a beautiful glow and bring depth to an expressive portrait. I love the open space of the beach, with room for the model to move. For jewelry, the sun can be a lovely ally, especially late in the day when it catches the sparkle of a piece. Clouds bring another kind of light, often softer and more even. If direct sunlight makes someone squint or strain their expression, I would rather change the angle or find a more comfortable place than force the photograph. Sunglasses can work when they belong in the image, but they are not the only answer. I have used shade in gardens, cities, and coastal settings, including near cliffs in Portugal. It can give bright clothing, such as fuchsia, a very different feeling. On a hot day, shade and breaks matter for the people as well as the photographs. Imagine a brand needing photographs of 30 looks in a day, combining street style and the beach. Before the shoot, I plan which outfit belongs against which background and allow time for changing and moving between spots. Santa Cruz was one of the places I loved working during my years in Portugal. Pastel dresses against local architecture, stronger colors in a lively street, a dark dress near the rocks, and a light outfit by the ocean could all belong in one project. For a Miami shoot, we choose the actual setting again, with the light, distances, access, and any required permission considered for that project. A studio is not limited to one plain background or a fixed number of lighting setups. Its possibilities depend on the space, equipment, team, and time. Shooting swimwear in January? That can be a real test. I love the ocean breeze, golden-pink evening light, and the moment a dress catches the wind. Asking a model to run along the shoreline brings a wonderful sense of freedom. The surroundings become part of the photograph. I enjoy talking through these little scenes with my clients. Models can feel like actresses in a film, because there’s something real to respond to. The light changes as the sun moves. That’s part of the appeal. I love those small surprises: someone closing their eyes to feel the sun, hair caught by the breeze, or a step through the edge of the water. There’s room for them within the story. When every garment detail or hairstyle needs to stay precisely repeatable, a controlled space may be the better choice. ## Planning an outdoor shoot in South Florida For a Miami project, I would rather begin with one suitable main location and a realistic backup than rush between places. We check the forecast and discuss heat, humidity, wind, rain, and thunderstorms, along with shade, water, breaks, and a place to change. Access and permission are checked for the exact location and scale of the shoot. If the conditions are unsuitable, we follow the alternative agreed for the project.
